Crossing the Mississippi

Today we crossed the Mississippi River (between Clinton and Fulton) which also crossed one of our previous road trips, The Great River Road (Venice, Louisiana to Lake Itasca, Minnesota).

We visited De Immigrant in Fulton and couldn't believe we missed this attraction on our previous trip. This is a beltmolen type windmill, which among other things means it is built into a hill. This mill has been set up as grist mill. The volunteer miller gave a good tour of the workings.

In Sterling, we stopped to see a statue of Lincoln honoring his visit there in 1856.

We also stumbled upon the Dillon House in Sterling, spending a little time first in the Sterling Rock Fall Historical Society museum before enjoying a tour of the home. The Dillon family were prominent in the steel and wire industry. The home is a particularly great specimen for a historic home because the original furnishings and decor are still in place. Lovely!

Outside the National Lincoln Highway Association offices in Franklin Grove is a large sign providing a little context for its location.
